Russian border official calls situation on Russian-Georgian border alarming

MOSCOW. June 21 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Federal Border Guard Service believes guerillas might make new attempts to break through to Russia from Georgia.

"The situation on the Chechen sector of the Russian-Georgian border remains alarming, and we do not rule out that guerillas could infiltrate from Georgia into Russia," Federal Border Guard Service Chief of Staff Colonel General Nikolai Reznichenko told journalists on Saturday.

He said no guerilla attempts to break through from Georgia have been recorded of late.

This year, Russian border guards have managed to establish closer interaction with their Georgian colleagues, Reznichenko said. "This concerns first of all the exchange of information," he said.

Replying to a question from Interfax, Reznichenko said a special border unit has recently begun serving in the North Caucasus. The unit is charged with rapidly responding to attempts by guerilla formations to illegally cross the border.

The special border unit is responsible for monitoring the Russian-Georgian border on the Chechen, Ingush and Dagestani sectors, he said.
