Russian-French naval exercises underway

SEVEROMORSK. July 7 (Interfax-AVN) - Joint Russian-French naval exercises are taking place in the Norwegian Sea.

Russia's contribution includes the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Chabanenko and the multi-purpose Vepr SSN, naval headquarters told Interfax.

The Latouche-Treville anti-submarine ship and the Casabianca SSN are representing France.

According to the press service of the fleet, the whole scenario would be disclosed only after the exercise ends. The press service defined the operational area as the Norwegian Sea and "route to the base in Severomorsk."

Admiral Gennady Suchkov, Northern Fleet Commander, had previously told Interfax that that this was the first step towards an international underwater collision avoidance convention advocated by Russia.
