PSKOV. July 23 (Interfax-AVN) - Chairman of the Federation Council's Foreign Affairs Committee Mikhail Margelov believes the elimination of the sons of toppled Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is unlikely to improve the situation in Iraq.
"The fact that Hussein's sons were not brought to trial but were killed in fighting proves that a genuine political process in Iraq is a long way off," Margelov told Interfax.
The longer the war, the stronger the retaliation the Iraqis will stage, he said. "The situation will lead to new victims among both the coalition troops and the local population," he said.
The coalition will sooner or later have to launch a peaceful political process, he said.
"Procrastination undermines hopes for a peaceful and efficient process. The vanished Osama bin Laden and Saddam have become virtual leaders of the terrorists and a flag" for the people ready to sacrifice their lives for religious principles, he said.
Unless Hussein is found and brought to trial, he may win free and democratic elections and lead a new government in ten to fifteen years, he said.
