Terrorist base near Moscow stamped out

MOSCOW. July 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Explosive devices discovered in the village of Tolstopaltsevo, 30 kilometers southwest of Moscow on Thursday have been neutralized.

An Interfax correspondent reported from the site that a special team of the Federal Security Service left the site at 4 a.m. Moscow time (0000 GMT) on Friday.

The explosive devices were neutralized in two stages.

Investigators from the Prosecutor General's office continue working outside the house where the terrorist base was discovered and the village remains cordoned off.

The operation began at about 2 p.m. Moscow time (1000 GMT) on Thursday when investigators and a Federal Security Service task unit arrived at Tolstopaltsevo in three minibuses. They started a search and discovered a store of explosives, namely so- called Shakhid belts.

A source in law enforcement told Interfax that the design and components of the explosive devices were identical to the ones that exploded in Tushino and central Moscow earlier.

The approaches to Tolstopaltsevo were blocked by 6 p.m. Moscow time (1400 GMT), policemen and experts on explosives were alerted.

The source did not rule out that the house had been a terrorist base for organizing explosions in Moscow. There has been no official confirmation of this scenario yet.
