TBILISI. July 28 (Interfax-AVN) - The Georgian peacekeeping company established for taking part in the peacekeeping operation in Iraq is set on alert before the departure for that country, Brigadier General Dmitry Lezhava, head of the Georgian Defense Ministry's HR directorate, said on Monday.
"A group of Georgian signal officers flew to Iraq several days ago, and the entire personnel of the peacekeeping company is set to leave in a few days," Lezhava told Interfax-Military News Agency.
"The company includes a Land Forces special-purpose platoon, a sapper platoon, and a medical platoon," he stressed.
While staying in Iraq, the Georgian peacekeepers "will accomplish various missions, in particular, the special-purpose platoon may take part in special operations of coalition forces," Lezhava said.
"The monthly salary of the peacekeepers in Iraq will equal that of servicemen of the Georgian peacekeeping units involved in the operation in Kosovo, i.e. USD400 or higher depending on the rank," he said.
While staying in Iraq, the Georgian company will be assigned to the U.S. military headquarters located in Kuwait.
Iraq is the second country to host Georgian peacekeepers. At the moment Georgia also maintains its contingent in Kosovo, where its servicemen act within the Turkish and German battalions.
