Russian Foreign Ministry confirms that 8 Guantanamo prisoners are Russian citizens

MOSCOW. Aug 8 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has officially confirmed that eight Russian citizens, who were detained during the anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan, are currently being held at the Guantanamo base in Cuba.

"The Russian Foreign Ministry can confirm that eight Russian citizens are among the members of the Taliban fighters detained by the U.S. forces during the anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan," reads a Russian Foreign Ministry release.

The U.S. "is working on completing the legal and technical formalities needed to extradite these citizens to Russia," reads the release.
