Georgian peacekeepers may be sent to Afghanistan

TBILISI. Aug 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgian Defense Minister David Tevzadze has not ruled out the possibility that Georgian peacekeepers may soon be sent to Afghanistan.

After talks with NATO Supreme Commander in Europe Gen. James Jones, who was in Tbilisi on a one day visit, he told reporters that NATO "is interested in the involvement of the armed forces of partner countries in the peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan."

Jones told reporters that beginning on August 11, NATO would join the peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan. It is up to NATO to decide how to develop its relations with partner countries, he added.

A source at the Georgian Defense Ministry told Interfax that the Sunday talks between Tevzadze and Jones focussed on the possibility of sending Georgian servicemen trained by American instructors to Afghanistan.

Asked about the Georgian peacekeepers sent to Iraq a week ago, Tevzadze said: "They are currently training, and in one and a half to two weeks, will start taking an active part in the peacekeeping mission."
