Georgia still eager to join NATO - Shevardnadze

TBILISI. Aug 20 (Interfax-AVN) - Speaking at a government meeting on Wednesday, Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze said, "Georgia's bid for NATO is still in force, and its efforts are directed towards complying with the requirements essential for joining the organization."

He added, "By joining NATO, Georgia would acquire a lot of strong allies represented by European states."

Not only the Georgian army, but all the other security agencies must comply with the NATO standards, as they "provide for a healthy moral and psychological climate in the country."

Next spring, Tbilisi will host a conference with the NATO leadership to review Georgia's cooperation with the alliance.

Georgia announced its bid for NATO membership at a summit in Prague last year.
