Moldovan military academy enjoying tougher admission competition

CHISINAU. Aug 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Law enforcement and army officer positions have been getting more and more prestigious in Moldova of late.

"More and more young people have desired in recent years to enter military service in Moldova - 136 young men entered the Moldovan Armed Forces Institute this year. The highest competition, four-to-one, has been for the border guard department," Vladimir Drugalyov, rector of the only military academy in the country, told Interfax-Military News Agency Tuesday.

He said that 35 percent of the freshmen had been villagers.

The Armed Forces Institute founded last September on the basis of the former Military College trains officers for all the services of the Armed Forces - National Army, Border Guards, and Carabineers Department. For the two latter services the academy admits 30-35 cadets annually, and 75 cadets will be taken for service in infantry, artillery, and communication units of the army.

According to the rector, the last lieutenants trained by the three-year college curriculum graduated this year.

In its nine years, the College trained 560 officers most of whom are currently in service with the National Army.
