KYIV. Aug 26 (Interfax-AVN) - A Ukrainian military delegation that consists of officials of the General Staff's WMD protection department left for a working visit to Latvia on Tuesday, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's press service told Interfax-Military News Agency.
"Military ecologists of the two countries are planning to discuss in detail prospects of implementing joint projects and programs," a press service official said.
In the framework of the visit, the Ukrainian experts are planning to study the experience of their Latvian colleagues in training specialists in WMD protection and maintaining environmental security of troops with reference to NATO standards, the official said.
The agenda of the visit includes a trip to the Latvian Armed Forces training center and discussion of further cooperation, including in implementation of joint radiation and environmental security programs.
The visit is taking place in accordance with the 2003 Plan of Bilateral Cooperation between the Ukrainian and Latvian Defense Ministries. The Ukrainian delegation is expected to return home on Wednesday.
The Ukrainian WMD protection department has joint environmental programs with eight countries - Russia, Bulgaria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the U.S., Latvia and Estonia.
Monitoring and studies of the environmental condition of military proving ranges and base areas of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and Ukrainian Navy, elaboration of joint training programs, mutual consultations, exchange of experience and technologies are among the priority spheres of cooperation.
