Local authorities involved in Ukrainian army reform

KYIV. Aug 27 (Interfax-AVN) - The commanders of military units headquartered in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine will hold a meeting chaired by Lieutenant General Anatoliy Toropchin, commander of the Ukrainian air defense forces, on Thursday.

"The heads of the Kharkiv regional and city administrations, as well as all top local state executives, will attend the meeting devoted to the reform of the Ukrainian Armed Forces," the press service of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry told Interfax- Military News Agency.

"The main goal of this high-level meeting is to determine how to fulfil presidential orders on army reform and efficiently use regional resources in implementing measures stipulated by the State Program for the Reform and Development of the Ukrainian Armed Forces for up to 2005," the press service said.

The meeting, according to the press service, will comprehensively consider primarily the transfer of released military property and social adaptation of resigning personnel.

Joint meetings of the military and civilian authorities have been sanctioned by the State Commission for the Reform and Development of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

In accordance with an order from the Ukrainian defense minister, such meetings will be held in all regions of the country from August to October. The Navy commander-in-chief will preside over such a meeting in Sevastopol, the Air Force commander-in-chief in Vinnitsya, the Land Forces commander and commanders of operative commands in cities where their forces are headquartered.
