Northern Fleet commander suspended over submarine incident

MOSCOW. Sept 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Gennady Suchkov has been suspended over the death of the K-159 nuclear submarine crew in the Barents Sea on August 30, commander of the Russian Navy Vladimir Kuroyedov has announced.

"President Vladimir Putin appointed Sergei Simonenko acting commander of the Northern Fleet last night. Suchkov was suspended," Kuroyedov said.

The decommissioned K-159 submarine sank in the Barents Sea when it was being towed to a scrapyard in the town of Polyarny. Only one of the ten crewmembers survived the disaster.
