Georgian Armed Forces chief-of-staff dismissed

TBILISI. Sept 18 (Interfax-AVN) - Lieutenant General Dzhoni Pirtskhalaishvili, chief-of-staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, is relieved from his duties starting September 19, a source in the Georgian State Chancellery told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.

"President Eduard Shevardnadze, who is the commander-in- chief of the Georgian Armed Forces, has accepted Dzhoni Pirtskhalaishvili's resignation starting September 19," the source said.

Pirtskhalaishviuli will run for parliament at the upcoming elections scheduled for November 2, 2003. He has been nominated a candidate in the Lanchkhuti district in western Georgia.

"Pirtskhalaishvili's deputy, Brigadier General Vladimir Imnadze, will act as chief-of-staff," the source said.
