Chiefs-of-staff of CIS armies meet in Moscow

MOSCOW. Sept 18 (Interfax-AVN) - Armed forces chiefs-of- staff of the CIS nations and the Collective Security Treaty Organization held a regular meeting in Moscow on Thursday.

The meeting was held at the CIS military cooperation coordination headquarters and was chaired by Russian Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff Anatoly Kvashnin, a spokesman for the headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"The main issues that were addressed by the committee of the chiefs-of-staff were related to the functioning of the Unified Headquarters of the Collective Security Treaty Organization that will be launched on January 1, 2004," the spokesman said.

The meeting also addressed the planning of joint exercises involving armed forces of the CIS nations.

"Participants in the meeting considered the activity of the committee aimed at setting up regional collective security systems and other issues of mutual interest," the spokesman said.

The meeting was attended by Secretary General of the Collective Security Council Nikolai Bordyuzha.

Representatives of Georgia, Moldova, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan did not take part in the meeting.
