SUKHUMI. Sept 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Lieutenant General Valery Yevnevich, Land Forces Deputy Commander-in-Chief for peacekeeping forces, completed his routine visit to CIS Collective Peacekeeping Force units, deployed in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict area, the force headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.
"The commission, headed by General Yevnevich, inspected such peacekeeping facilities as observation posts, roadblocks, and military bases in the buffer zone, analyzed combat readiness and combat capabilities of peacekeeping units, personnel morale, as well as their standard supplies of servicemen," the source said.
The Collective Peacekeeping Force in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict area started its mission in summer 1994 in compliance with the decision, adopted by CIS Heads of State Council. At the present time Russian peacekeepers, attached to the Collective Peacekeeping Force, discharge the task of separating the belligerent sides in the Gali and the Zugdidi districts, as well as the Kodori Gorge.
Before his visit to Abkhazia Yevnevich had met with Major General Tengiz Oshkhereli, Deputy Chief-of-Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, in Zugdidi, and discussed with him the situation in the region.
Last weekend Yevnevich inspected the situation in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict area, where Russian peacekeepers jointly with Georgian and Ossetian units have been deployed since 1992 as part of the Collective Peacekeeping Force.
