ROSTOV-ON-DON. Sept 23 (Interfax-AVN) - Over 10,000 servicemen and over 2,000 pieces of military hardware and armament are involved in a large-scale military exercise that is underway in several southern Russian regions, the press service of the North Caucasus military district said on Tuesday.
The 58th army launched a command post exercise (CPEX) in the Stavropol territory and Russia's internal republics of Dagestan and Kalmykia under the supervision of district commander Colonel General Vladimir Boldyrev on Monday, a press service official told Interfax-Military News Agency.
"About 800 railway cars and flatcars are used for delivering troops from their permanent stationing areas to the exercise areas. Other units of the 58th army made an independent march and deployed field camps in the concentration area within a short period of time," the official said.
According to the district headquarters, attack planes and army aviation of the 4th air force and air defense army will be used for imitating a real combat situation and supporting the joint-arms army from the air.
The Caspian flotilla, Interior Ministry Force, and border guards have sent operations teams to take part in the CPEX that will be in progress until Saturday.
It is the first exercise of such scale in the North Caucasus in the past 15 years, the official said.
