Russian airbase in Kyrgyzstan to help combating terrorism - senator

MOSCOW. Sept 23 (Interfax-AVN) - The chairman of the foreign affairs committee in the Federation Council upper house of Russian parliament, Mikhail Margelov, said on Tuesday that the Russian-Kyrgyz agreement on the creation of an airbase in the Kyrgyz community of Kant is a real instrument of countering international terrorism.

"The Collective Rapid-Deployment Forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization members and the Anti-Terrorist Center of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization are getting a real instrument of countering international terrorism that threatens the security of Russia and its allies on southern borders," Margelov told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"The legal foundation establishment for the accords achieved during Vladimir Putin's visit to Kyrgyzstan in 2002 fixes Russia's long-term strategy on the CIS territory, which is a priority for this country, and on a broader scale, in Central Asia," Margelov said.

"The agreement on the creation of the airbase in Kyrgyzstan is a sizeable contribution to the strengthening of regional stability which is based on the Collective Security Treaty Organization and Shanghai Cooperation Organization," he added.

The agreement was signed on Monday.
