U.S. aware of mistake in invading Iraq - Russian deputy foreign minister

MOSCOW. Sept 23 (Interfax-AVN) - The Americans have come to realize that they made a mistake in sending troops to Iraq unilaterally, in particular as concerns the future of the anti- terrorist coalition, Russian First Deputy Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Trubnikov has said.

"I think that this country's (Russia's - Interfax) position helped them understand fairly quickly that their decision to send troops to Iraq was a mistake and lead to adverse consequences for setting up a broad anti-terrorist front," he told Interfax.

"The situation around Iraq has confirmed that despite all the snags and contradictions the drive to set up a broad international anti- terrorist alliance under the aegis of the UN is a prevailing trend with no alternatives," Trubnikov said.

"The forces of the anti-terrorist coalition should not be allowed to split or be weakened by internal differences or squabbles in the face of the large-scale terrorist threat," he said.
