UN police instructors to arrive in Abkhazia

SUKHUMI. Sept 24 (Interfax-AVN) - Twenty police instructors will arrive at the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone in early October to join the UN military observer mission, Foreign Minister of the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia Sergei Shamba said on Wednesday.

"Abkhazia and the UN mission have effectively cleared all technical details of the instructors' activity," Shamba told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The decision to send UN police observers to the conflict zone was made in July with the involvement of international mediators, the minister stressed. The policemen's missions are to monitor the situation and issue recommendations to law- enforcement agencies of the conflicting parties.

The international police force will be stationed in the Gali district of Abkhazia and Zugdidi district of Georgia, Shamba said.

He added that about 20 officers of Abkhaz law-enforcement agencies will leave for former Yugoslavia circa October 10-12 with the UN mediation to study the experience of work in conflict zones.
