Sukhumi demands security guarantees for delegation going to Tbilisi

SUKHUMI. Sept 29 (Interfax-AVN) - The self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia has demanded security guarantees for its delegation going to Tbilisi at the beginning of October for talks on a mechanism of preventing the resumption of hostilities.

"We assume that the hosting side is responsible for security, including moral responsibility," aide of the Abkhaz president Astamur Tania told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

He said in this context that officials in Tbilisi had not ruled out the possibility of the arrest of the delegation head, Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba.

The talks were originally scheduled for September 23, but were postponed. The Abkhaz administration has named statements on Shamba's possible arrest among the reasons for the postponement.

According to the aide, Sukhumi is not considering the conduction of a meeting in a different location so far.

The talks on working out a mechanism of non-resumption of hostilities between Georgia and Abkhazia will take place under the UN aegis.
