OSCE helping Georgia destroy Soviet-time air bombs

TBILISI. Oct 6 (Interfax-AVN) - Destruction of time-expired air bombs has started at former Soviet and Russian military bases in Georgia under an OSCE project, a spokesman for the OSCE mission in Tbilisi said on Monday.

"The Georgian Delta military research and technical center is implementing the project of destroying dangerous air bombs whose storage term has expired under the supervision of OSCE personnel," the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"The removal of dangerous ammunition from the military airfield in Shiraki, Eastern Georgia, will start this week. All air bombs will subsequently be destroyed," he said.

According to Delta, about 500 air bombs subject to destruction remain at the Shiraki airfield.

Funds for destroying outdated ammo are provided by Britain and Finland. The process will end in June 2004.
