Interior Ministry personnel find four arms caches in Chechnya

KHANKALA. Oct 8 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Interior Ministry personnel found four rebel caches with arms and ammo in Chechnya on Wednesday, Colonel Vasily Panchenkov, press service chief of the Combined Federal Force in the North Caucasus, told Interfax- Military News Agency.

The caches contained an AK-47 assault rifle, about 500g of explosives, several mortar shells and nearly 1,000 small-arms cartridges, Panchenkov said.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the service car of Batukhan Kurbanov, director general of the Interbiznes company, in the Zavodskoi district of Grozny at 5:00 p.m. Moscow time (1300 GMT) on Wednesday, the colonel went on. Kurbanov's guard got a slight wound, but the businessmen was not hurt. The persons involved in the crime are being searched for.

According to Panchenkov, Chechen Prime Minister Anatoly Popov praised the performance of law-enforcement agencies during the presidential elections.

"Though servicemen are not involved directly in the restoration work, their assistance to local residents is important," Popov said.

"Several units of the federal forces and military commandant's office render great support to the republic's residents," he noted.
