MOSCOW. Oct 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Chechen president-elect Akhmad Kadyrov believes that the best way out for separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov is to stand trial.
"I am prepared (for contacts with Maskhadov - Interfax), he knows this, but I think he also knows that it is better for him to stand trial than to be destroyed," Kadyrov told a Friday news conference at the Interfax central office.
Among other options for Maskhadov, Kadyrov named "political asylum or a reunion with his family in Malaysia."
In Kadyrov's opinion, the October 5 presidential elections in Chechnya demonstrated the local public's attitude towards Maskhadov.
"If people had supported Maskhadov and his side, they would not have gone to vote as they did," Kadyrov said.
He cited as another indication of the public mistrust in Maskhadov the outcome of the Chechen constitutional referendum. "90% voted for the adoption of the constitution in a public vote, a constitution we never had," he added.
