MOSCOW. Oct 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Over 100 nuclear submarines written off from the Russian Navy are waiting to be disposed of, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Ministry Veniamin Polysayev said on Friday.
"As of September, 103 out of 270 nuclear submarines built in Russia and 41 nuclear-powered technological vessels are waiting to be scrapped. They have been written off from the Russian Navy and handed over to the Atomic Energy Ministry for cutting into pieces," Polysayev told Interfax-Military News Agency.
"The ships and submarines are concentrated in water areas of enterprises and navy bases, and 76 of them still contain active reactor zones," he said.
"We have already disposed of 89 out of 192 nuclear submarines handed over to the Atomic Energy Ministry," Polysayev noted.
According to experts, Russian needs USD4bn to complete the disposal.
