100-200 Chechens to be recruited for active-duty service in fall 2003

MOSCOW. Oct 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Military commissioner's offices of the Chechen Republic will recruit 100 to 200 young men for active-duty service during the fall draft of 2003, Major General Viktor Kozhushko, chief of the draft section in the General Staff mobilization directorate, said on Wednesday.

"There are still enough problems with the draft in the Chechen Republic. The main reason is that registration of persons liable for military service has not been restored in Chechnya. It is only restored by 80 to 85 percent," Kozhushko told a news conference at the Izvestia media center.

There are also a lot of problems related to lack of doctors for medical examination of potential draftees in Chechnya, he went on. "There are not enough premises for military commissioner's offices and medical establishments," he said.

Kozhushko stressed that the young men recruited in Chechnya serve in guard companies under military commandant's offices on the republic's territory. "The General Staff is considering the sending of recruits from Chechnya for service in Emergencies Ministry units and the Interior Ministry Force," the general noted.
