125 Russian aircraft lost in past five years in flight accidents

MOSCOW. Oct 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia's state aviation (the fleets of military, border guard, police, customs, and other state institutions, as well as aircraft engaged in mobilization and defense events) lost 125 aircraft with 344 killed over the past five years, Viktor Ozerov, chairman of the Federation Council Security and Defense Committee, told Interfax-Military News Agency Wednesday.

"State aviation has lost 125 aircraft in flight accidents, with 344 killed since 1998. In this number, the Armed Forces lost 60 aircraft in the period, with 198 killed. The aviation of federal executive bodies lost 65 aircraft and 146 people. In the first nine months of this year, accidents in aviation killed 67 people and destroyed 21 aircraft," he said.

He also said that the committee would hold a round table discussion on Thursday, devoted to flight security in Russia and its legal support.

"The meeting will be attended by the representatives of the presidential administration, federal executive authorities, deputy commanders of the armed services, and chiefs of civil and experimental aviation," Ozerov said.

According to Ozerov, the recommendations of the round table discussion would be applied in flight security legislation.
