Ukrainian peacekeeping brigade in Iraq reinforced with Slovak sappers

KYIV. Oct 17 (Interfax-AVN) - A sapper unit of the Slovak Armed Forces has been assigned to the 5th Ukrainian detached mechanized brigade organic of Multinational Division Center-South in Iraq, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's press service said on Friday.

"The Slovak sappers' main mission is to lift minefields on the Iranian-Iraqi border and to clear from mines the main approaches and forts where Iraqi border guards will serve," a press service official told Interfax-Military News Agency.

According to him, the sappers are armed with two T-55 tanks without guns, which are fitted with MT-7 trawls. They also have mine detectors and other special assets.

The brigade's engineer service chief and servicemen of the Slovak unit left for the Iranian-Iraqi border on Friday to reconnoiter the area for the first time, the official said.

An engineer platoon of the Mongolian armed forces was assigned to the Ukrainian brigade's command on Tuesday.
