Russia to decide whether to set up unified aircraft producer this year

MOSCOW. Nov 6 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Aviation and Space Agency, Ministry of Industry, Science and Technologies, and other authorities concerned are to decide soon whether it is necessary to set up a unified aircraft producer, First Deputy Minister of Industry, Science and Technologies Alexander Brindikov told reporters in Moscow on Thursday.

"We are developing a conclusion whether such a company is needed," he said.

In response to a question from Interfax-Military News Agency, Brindikov said that the collusion would be delivered this year. Then it will be forwarded to the federal government, he said.

Although the governmental defense industry reform program implies a two-stage approach, some offer to speed it up. Brindikov said that in some areas this was necessary but other areas should rather be reformed step by step.

According to Brindikov, all problems of the national aircraft production industry cannot be solved by just merging producers into one.

He emphasized that the industry should be diversified, while currently some firms tend to be involved in all technological operations, which hinders operational efficiency.

He also said that military facilities should not be separated from civilian assets. "This would be a severe mistake," he said.

The concept of a unified national aircraft producer was put forward by Deputy Prime Minister Boris Alyoshin.
