Russian, Georgian experts to resume talks on military bases

TBILISI. Nov 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian and Georgian experts will hold the next leg of military talks in Moscow on Wednesday and Thursday, a source in the Georgian Foreign Ministry told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"Officials of the Georgian Foreign and Defense Ministries are planning to fly to Moscow on Tuesday," the source said.

Georgia still insists on the removal of the 162nd and 12th Russian military bases from Akhalkalaki and Batumi respectively over three years, while Russia says that the withdrawal requires at least 11 years.

Russia disbanded the 137th military base in Vaziani, a Tbilisi suburb, in summer 2000. In addition, Moscow announced the closure of the 50th base in Gudauta in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia, though Georgia demands an international monitoring of the base.

The previous leg of Russian-Georgian expert consultations took place in Tbilisi in September 2003.

The latest leg of talks between the state delegations on military issues was held in Moscow in February this year.
