Abkhazia tightens security at key facilities in view of terrorist threats

SUKHUMI. Dec 15 (Interfax-AVN) - The security service with the help of the public will assume special control over strategic facilities in the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia given the threat of terrorist attacks, service chief Givi Argba told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

"We have received intelligence reports of possible acts of sabotage and terrorism in Abkhazia ahead of the early presidential elections in Georgia on January 4. Security will be tightened at man-made bodies of water, hydro power stations, including the one on the Inguri river, big industrial facilities, bridges and the university," he said.

According to Agrba, chiefs of enterprises and organizations have been forwarded instructions that suggest recruitment of volunteers among their subordinates for on-duty service. In case of necessity, the chiefs are instructed to contact the security service.

"The situation is under control now, but chances are high that certain forces in Georgia will try to time terrorist acts with the presidential elections to show that the Abkhaz authorities are incapable," he said.
