TBILISI. Dec 24 (Interfax-AVN) - A Georgian army serviceman has been killed in an incident in a quick-response battalion, press secretary of the Georgian defense minister Nino Sturua said on Wednesday.
"A serviceman was killed in a support unit of the quick- response battalion stationed in Alekseyevka, a Tbilisi suburb, overnight to Wednesday," Sturua told Interfax-Military News Agency.
Six servicemen broke the seal of the armory room under the pretext of alien persons' invasion of the unit's territory and stole three assault rifles and six magazines with cartridges.
"This was followed by shooting which killed Private Gvaramadze. Details of the incident are being established," Sturua said.
According to her, all stolen arms were found on Private Kokhreidze, who took a battalion driver hostage and used his vehicle to leave for the Tbilisi pond. Upon reaching the pond, he released the driver and escaped.
"As a result of investigation measures taken by the police and the military prosecutor's office, Private Kokhreidze was detained at about 7:30 a.m. local time," Sturua said.
Four more servicemen involved in the incident have been detained.
"The stolen arms and ammunition have been seized, and investigation is underway," she added.
