Federal troops in Chechnya came under fire 12 times last week

KHANKALA. Dec 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal troops in Chechnya came under fire 12 times between December 22-28, including three times in Grozny, a source in the headquarters of the Combined Federal Forces in the North Caucasus told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

"Rebel leaders keep trying to mount an organized armed resistance to the federal forces," the source said.

Last week, federal forces and rebels clashed in the Grozny rural, the Vedeno, the Nozhai-Yurt and the Shelkovskaya districts. Three staff members from President Akhmad Kadyrov's security services were injured when their vehicle came under fire in the Kurchaloi district.

SU-24 Fencer bombers and SU-25 Frogfoot assault jets made 44 flights in Chechnya last week. They destroyed two rebel bases and two transmitters and made eight jams on highland paths and mountain passes.

"MI-8 Hip, MI-24 Hind and MI-26 Halo helicopters gave support to the army in Chechnya. They conducted more than 400 flights last week," the source said.

About 40 pieces of firearms and 15 kilograms of explosives were confiscated, and 14 illegal oil refineries were demolished last week.
