Ajarian leader says under threat of assassination

TBILISI. Dec 31 (Interfax-AVN) -Aslan Abashidze, head of the Ajarian autonomous republic in Georgia, said he has information that an assassination attempt is being prepared on him.

"There is information that certain Tbilisi leaders and security officials are preparing an assassination attempt on the head of Ajaria, and not only on him," Abashidze said at a joint news conference with Georgian State Minister Zurab Zhvania early on Wednesday.

A man suspected as one of the possible perpetrators of the attempt has been detained in Ajaria "and is already being interrogated," he said.

Abashidze said an attempt on him was prepared in Tbilisi earlier as well.

Zhvania said in response that he would instruct the appropriate agencies to verify this information.
