SUKHUMI. Jan 8 (Interfax-AVN) - An agreement on peace and non-resumption of hostilities between Tbilisi and Sukhumi would be a good foundation for furthering negotiations that were thwarted by the change of the Georgian administration, said Valery Arshba, vice-president of the unrecognized republic of Abkhazia.
Arshba called on the new Georgian administration not to reconsider earlier accords, "which made up the core of progress in the peace settlement process."
Tbilisi must realize the futility of supporting the Abkhaz government in exile, Arshba told Abkhaz television on Thursday.
"If the Georgian authorities act firmly to disband gangs and armed groups that are committing acts of terrorism and sabotage in Abkhazia, that will have a positive effect on the entire peace settlement process and build mutual confidence," Arshba said.
