Kyiv denies using teargas against Iraqi protesters

KYIV. Jan 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukrainian peacekeepers say they have not used teargas or weapons to disperse protesters in Al Kut, Iraq, the press service of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry told Interfax on Monday.

Protesters in Al Kut are currently demanding jobs and higher salaries, the press service quoted Vladimir Begun from the fifth separate mechanized infantry brigade as saying. Meanwhile, Ukrainian peacekeepers are holding negotiations with organizers of the protests to resolve the problem in a civilized manner.

The Ukrainians are using the so-called "live shield" against the protesters at the moment. The Ukrainian peacekeepers have never used extreme measures in Iraq, the press service said.
