Military railroaders checked about 1,000km of railway in Chechnya in 2003

MOSCOW. Jan 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Servicemen of the Federal Railway Forces Service checked 992km of railway tracks in Chechnya in 2003 to make sure there are no mines there, the service's press center said on Monday.

Last year, the service also conducted capital restoration of railway bridges across the Sunzha, Belka and Shaudon Rivers and built a temporary railway bridge across the Shaudon River, the press center's report reads.

The Federal Railway Forces Service escorted 319 military and other trains and transported about 64,000 personnel in Chechnya in 2003.

According to the report, training and practical work was conducted at 150 facilities of outside customers last year, including 12 railways of the country and 40 facilities of the Defense Ministry. The service performed capital and medium repairs on 430km of railway tracks. Under the service's own construction plan, the work was performed on 102 facilities in 35 military compounds, and 64 facilities were commissioned.

The service focused on accomplishing missions against the background of local conflicts and coping with consequences of emergency situations on the Russian railway network, the press service said.
