Deputy PM denies Russia smuggled arms to Iraq

MOSCOW. Jan 12 (Interfax-AVN) - A Russian deputy prime minister has denied allegations by U.S. officials that Russian weapons were smuggled to Iraq in violation of the arms embargo against the Saddam Hussein regime.

"If one is talking about information that the U.S. possesses, it wouldn't be bad to share such data with us in such cases. That's the only way to build cooperation," Deputy Prime Minister Boris Alyoshin told Interfax on Monday.

"The government doesn't know of any such facts."

A Russian governmental commission on export control shows that Russia fully complied with international standards, Alyoshin said. "We are guided by international principles in such matters.

"I think it's impossible to bypass the government in carrying out any large-scale action."
