U.S. transfers 77 armored vehicles to Georgia under Train and Equip program

TBILISI. Jan 13 (Interfax-AVN) - The vessel, which has delivered military materiel from the U.S. to Georgia, is being unloaded in Georgia's Black Sea port of Poti.

"The vessel has carried 77 armored vehicles, handed over by the U.S. to the Georgian Defense Ministry, under provisions of the second stage of the two-year Pentagon-sponsored Train and Equip program to be completed in May," a source in the Georgian Defense Ministry told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.

The source stated that the materiel was to be fielded with the Georgian Armor unit to be trained by U.S. military experts.

"According to the information I have, the vessel has delivered a total of 137 vehicles, with 60 of them to be transferred to Central Asia," the source said.

He also mentioned that the U.S. military experts were to start training the Georgian Armor unit, attached to the 11th Motorized Rifle Brigade on Sunday.

Prior to that the following units have undergone training under the USD64m Train and Equip program: the 111th Light Infantry Battalion, the Commandos Special Purpose Battalion, the 16th Alpine Battalion, and the 113th Light Infantry Battalion.
