TBILISI. Jan 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgian defense minister Lieutenant General David Tevzadze has departed for Iraq to inspect Georgian peacekeeping units deployed there, his press secretary Nino Sturua told Interfax-Military News Agency Thursday.
"The defense minister's mission in Iraq is to inspect the Georgian peacekeeping unit deployed in Tikrit, the hometown of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein," she said.
A Georgian company comprising medics, sappers, and SOp fighters has been deployed in Iraq since last August.
According to the Georgian Defense Ministry, a Georgian peacekeeping task force of 217 personnel would be sent to Iraq in early February. The task force will include a SOp company and teams of engineers and medics.
