MOSCOW. Jan 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian-U.S. cooperation is of key importance for global stability, deputy secretary of the Russian Security Council Oleg Chernov said on Monday.
"The interaction between Russia and the U.S., which has reached a new level owing to efforts made by the presidents of the two countries, is of exceptional importance for maintaining global stability and finding appropriate responses to new threats and challenges," the Security Council's press service quoted Chernov as saying at a meeting in Moscow with a group of U.S. public and business figures and political scientists.
"It is necessary to work to ensure that partnership and strategic dialogue are not guided by opportunist considerations, including those regarding election campaigns."
The press service of the Security Council, a body that oversees the armed forces and security services, said international and regional security and bilateral issues were raised at the meeting.
The U.S. visitors included former national security adviser Brent Scowcroft, former defense secretary James Schesinger, Nixon Center President Dimitri Simes and Vice President Cliff Kupchan, U.S.-Russia Business Council President Eugene Lawson, and chairman of the board of the PFC Energy company Robinson West.
