Azerbaijan retains right to use force in Karabakh

BAKU. Jan 20 (Interfax-AVN) - Azerbaijan favors a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, but retains the right to use force to liberate its lands from Armenian occupation, President Ilham Aliyev told journalists on Tuesday.

"Azerbaijan has every right to liberate its lands at any time, using all possible means," he said.

Aliyev also underscored the need for further talks with Armenia.

The Azerbaijani authorities "are by no means satisfied with the activities of the co-chairmen of the OSCE Minsk Group conducted over the past few years," the president said.

"They have to develop new suggestions and put more pressure on the aggressor. The presidents should hold meetings, if these meetings can yield any progress," Aliyev said.

"But at the same time, the OSCE should not act simply as an eyewitness. We are putting high hopes on its work," he said.

Aliyev said that expanding his country's economic and military potential is vital for a fair solution to the conflict.

The OSCE Minsk Group, which comprises the United States, Russia and France, has been working to help Azerbaijan and Armenia put an end to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
