MOSCOW. Jan 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Terrorists from al-Qaeda are trying to expand to new territories, including Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Northwest Africa, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Anatoly Safonov said.
A transcript of Safonov's interview was posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry website on Tuesday.
"Tension persists in three conflict areas - the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Iraq - and each of them poses a threat involving the further escalation of terrorism and extremism and an increase in Islamic radicalism," he said.
The technological methods used by terrorists are becoming increasingly complicated.
Safonov also pointed out that terrorists are "trying to move towards the frontier" that separates them from possessing weapons of mass destruction. In addition, there is a threat that terrorists may obtain "other dangerous materials: radiological, toxic and bacteriological, as well as some types of conventional weapons," Safonov said.
