Federation Council delegates discuss Russian-Japanese action plan realization in Tokyo

TOKYO. Jan 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian senators have discussed the realization of the Russian-Japanese action plan with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

"In the course of the Wednesday meeting with Japanese Prime Minster Junichiro Koizumi, a delegation of the Russian Federation Council, invited to Tokyo by the Japanese government, has discussed realization of the Russian-Japanese action plan, including actions, aimed at strengthening security in the region," Viktor Ozerov, head of the Russian delegation and chairman of the Federation Council Defense and Security Committee, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Wednesday.

The Russian-Japanese action plan was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Koizumi in January 2003. Cooperation, envisioned by the plan, is aimed at reaching a new level in Russian-Japanese relations, promoting further mutual understanding, strengthening mutual trust, and searching for a mutually beneficial solution for singing a peace treaty.

"Russian senators have also met with senior officials of the Japanese parliamentary defense committee and discussed specific problems, facing the two sides in the field of cooperation and combating international terrorism, as well as the situation in Afghanistan and Iraq," Ozerov said.

He also reported that the visit envisions a meeting with senior officials of the Japanese National Defense Agency, and negotiations with Japanese MPs on cooperation with Russian Parliament.

"In addition to that we will visit the prefect's office in Kyoto, and meet with a group of Japanese businessmen," Ozerov said.

The visit of the Russian Federation Council delegation to Japan is to be completed on Sunday.
