Series of terrorist attacks prevented in Chechnya, Dagestan

KHANKALA. Jan 26 (Interfax-AVN - Law-enforcers prevented a series of terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus last weekend, the provisional press center of the Russian Interior Ministry in the North Caucasus said on Monday.

"A series of terrorist attacks planned by rebels was prevented in Chechnya and Dagestan. One of them was to be committed by a female kamikaze terrorist," a press center official told Interfax-Military News Agency.

A female guerilla who was residing in the Shelkovskaya village was detained in the town of Kizlyar in Dagestan. "The widow of a killed rebel who had undergone psychological conditioning, wanted to explode herself as an act of terrorism," the official said.

Another two large-scale terrorist attacks were prevented in Grozny and Achkhoi-Martan. "Powerful homemade explosive devices containing metal balls, bolts, nuts and nails as hitting elements were found and detected there," he said.

According to the official, two rebels were destroyed during a vehicle check in Grozny.

"When policemen were checking a Zhiguli car, two rebels riding on it suddenly fired at the policemen. One of the criminals was killed on the spot by return fire," the official said. Another rebel got out of the car and tried to escape to a ruined building. He fired back and wounded a policeman. When the man was surrounded and ordered to put down weapons, he shot himself dead.
