Seven rebels killed in Chechnya last week

KHANKALA. Jan 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal units in Chechnya destroyed seven rebels last week, a source in the headquarters of the Combined Federal Force told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

"Engagements occurred in Grozny and in the Shali, Vedeno, Urus-Martan and Kurchaloi districts. Seven rebels were killed in shootouts and 12 were captured," the source said.

Federal positions came under fire 23 times and eight armored vehicles touched off landmines last week, he went on. Sappers defused over 100 explosive devices.

Four arms and ammo caches were detected. One of them contained a portable air defense missile launcher.

SU-24 Fencer frontline bombers and SU-25 Frogfoot attack planes flew 18 combat missions last week. They destroyed a rebel mountain base and two retransmitters and set three roadblocks on mountain paths.

MI-8 Hip, MI-24 Hind and MI-26 Halo helicopters flew over 300 sorties. MI-24 helicopters destroyed three rebel firing points and an ambush on a federal motorway.
