Search operation in progress in Chechen separatist leader's native village

GROZNY. Jan 28 (Interfax-AVN) - A major operation to find weapons, munitions and explosives is currently underway in Alleroi, the native village of Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov.

The Chechen Interior Ministry told Interfax on Wednesday evening that up to 1,500 law enforcement officers are involved in the operation.

The search was launched following a report that a rebel group led by Maskhadov's security chief had entered the village.

The village has been cordoned off and houses and other buildings are being searched. An ID check is underway as well.

So far there have not been any reports of casualties or injuries.
