Russian prosecutor general complains about theft in armed forces

MOSCOW. Jan 30 (Interfax-AVN) - More than 1,000 Russian troops, including about 200 officers, were convicted of "encroachment upon federal property" last year, Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov said before his department's collegium on Friday.

Ustinov said enough food and other supplies had been stolen in the military "to supply the personnel, for example, of the North Caucasus Military District for a month."

"For three years running, rear officials and auditors of the 14th Air Force and Air Defense Army checked the fuel services of one unit, but failed to find 4,000 tonnes of aircraft fuel that was missing and cost 20 million rubles," he said.

"And that amount would have been enough for a MIG squadron to undergo a whole year of proper training," Ustinov said.

He dismissed complaints by some officials that a shortage of fuel is preventing air force pilots from clocking more than 10% of their scheduled annual flight hours.
