Rebel leader killed in Chechnya

MOSCOW/KHANKALA. Feb 2 (Interfax-AVN) - Chechen law enforcers killed Movsar Taimaskhanov, the rebel leader of the Gudermes district, and detained several of his subordinates, the headquarters of the federal forces in the North Caucasus told Interfax.

"Several leaders of illegal armed formations led by the so- called emir of the Gudermes underground Movsar Taimaskhanov were detained in a special operation. Taimaskhanov offered armed resistance during detention and was liquidated," spokesman for the headquarters Colonel Ilya Shabalkin said on Monday.

He said Taimaskhanov had long been on the federal wanted list for kidnappings in Chechnya and Dagestan.

Shabalkin said the detained rebels are charged with abduction, sabotage against federal forces and civilians, and extortion.

He said the special operation involved the Interior Ministry's provisional group, the Federal Security Service, and district police.
