Moldovan defense minister slams military departments of civilian academies

CHISINAU. Feb 2 (Interfax-AVN) - Moldovan Defense Ministry leaders are not satisfied with the work of military departments in some higher educational establishments of the country, a source in the ministry told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

"Speaking to pro-rectors of educational establishments and heads of military departments, Moldovan Defense Minister Viktor Gaichuk said that the work of these bodies does not meet requirements set by resolutions of the country's government and parliament," the source said.

The minister said a new statute should be drafted to outline training programs taking into account peculiarities of each educational establishment. The documents should be approved by the Ministries of Defense and Education, he stressed.

Vitaly Zavgorodniy, advisor to the chairman of the parliamentary commission for national security, said at the meeting that lawmakers are also concerned about the situation at military departments. That is why their work will be thoroughly inspected and analyzed in February and March. Following that, the parliamentary commission will come up with proposals regarding the work of the departments.

According to the source, participants in the meeting said that experts have no claims only to the work of the military department at the Moldovan Medical University. The department has been operational since 1945.

Five Chisinau-based higher educational establishments have military departments. Two more departments will soon open in state universities located in Balti and Kahul.
