CIS peacekeepers and Abkhazia protesting Georgian action in security area

SUJ|KHUMI. Feb 5 (Interfax-AVN) - The command of CIS peacekeepers and Abkhazia has protested Georgian action in the security and disarmament area at a routine UN-observed Thursday's four-sided meeting in the Gali district.

According to peacekeepers' press service chief Sergei Isayev, the Georgian anti-criminal operation has good goals, but unilateral action in the security area could have hampered the peace process.

On the other hand, prosecutor of the Zugdidi district of Georgia Mebrjol Chkadua said that the operation can only be successful it criminals are taken by surprise.

According to Abkhaz minister of interior Abesalom Beia, 150 Abkhaz policemen set into the area recently were busy with criminality prophylactic measures.

Previously Abkhaz prime minister Raul Khajimba confirmed that additional Abkhaz police forces had been sent to the district in connection with the special operation conducted by Georgia in the adjacent Zugdidi district, because Georgian rebels could try to infiltrate into Abkhazia in the fuss of the operation.

Khajimba said that Georgia "has notified neither Russian peacekeepers, nor UN military observers, which violates previously signed international agreements."

He added that although a police operation is Georgia's internal affair, Abkhazia would do its best to keep criminals off its territory. He recalled that in 1992 invasion of Georgian forces into Abkhazia was covered by alleged presence of ex- president Gamsahurdia's forces there.

"So, (Georgia - Interfax-AVN) might again gamble on the presence of some criminal groups in the Gali district," he said.
